"The Women's Clinic was inspired by my mother who died a few years ago and the amazing generosity of spirit she showed towards me throughout her life. Also by my grandmother, my teachers at university, all the many women I have seen as patients, my senior women friends and colleagues, and by an old girlfriend many years ago who through her betrayal first taught me the importance of self esteem (You learn the best stuff from seemingly negative experiences!). It has concerned me ever since that so many women suffer from low self worth. It comes from a deep disrespect of our own femininity and leads to further disrespect of other women. Instead of supporting each other with the sharing of our knowledge we undermine each other's efforts to become happy and fulfilled. Women's lack of self-esteem straddles all classes, backgrounds and races. It is all the more surprising in seemingly confident professional women.

The Women's Clinic is run by women for women. It is a network of female professional support and advice from gynaecologists, lawyers, psychiatrists, counsellors, career mentors, GP's and anyone else who wants to make their professional skills available to other women. We are developing Women's Groups for personal growth and self-confidence. I hope that all this is the start of an initiative that will grow and grow as women continue to take their place alongside men." Sandie Shaw
