Well here in the UK everything ground to a complete halt in June.
The Queen’s Jubilee followed by the World Cup completely took over.

The Queen

I wasn’t too sure about the Jubilee to start with but soon became so engrossed in all the fun and dressing up and pageantry. It was like living inside the huge film set of a costume drama.
Of course, it all had a political edge. Following hard on the heels of the still unresolved dispute over Tony Blair’s argument with Black Rod (what a name! – the mind boggles) over the late Queen Mum’s lying in arrangements. Which, by the way, was a great lead up to the Jubilee romp.

The Palace

It soon became a Royalists v Republicans media extravaganza. I think the Queen won that one hands down. The ‘do’ at Buckingham Palace was rather good entertainment, though probably not for the reasons intended. My highlights were-

  • Joe Cocker’s brilliant performance that put all those young manufactured rock/pop pretenders in their place.
  • Ray Davis singing Lola, though I could have done without the Union Jack suit. It doesn’t seem at all anarchistic these days, more establishment, and I don’t think that was his intention.
  • Brian Wilson – What was that all about? I have never seen a man on so much medication and still be conscious. It was so bad it was almost good. I found myself singing Beach Boys songs all week.
  • All my family say I dreamt it but I am sure I saw Macca kiss the Queen on the cheek. To the dungeons, off with his head!
  • The amazing fireworks at the end. The UK taxpayers certainly got their money’s worth. I hope the Queen enjoyed what we bought for her.

Sir Mick

Then there was Mick Jagger’s knighthood. For what exactly? His clothes sense? Bedroom manners? For being a jolly good all round egg? Well he has certainly put himself around. The Queen often gives this honour for commercial services to the country but the Stones choose not to work in the UK, as the Government will not give their concerts any tax breaks. His money is also kept abroad. So not financial then. It turns out that the person who organised the Queen’s Palace party is also Mick’s PR. Hmmmm…. It is who you know, dontcha know. It’s all jealousy on my part. I would love to be honored as someone important like Keeper Of The Spare Woolly Jumper or Nibbler of The Rat Catcher’s Pink Garters.

Rare Archive!

With all this nostalgia knocking about I decided to root through my old personal memorabilia and came up with these two stunning photos taken during the celebrations of the Queen’s coronation fifty years ago. I was five years old.

Here is our kids’ street party at Barmead Gardens, Dagenham. That’s me, yes me, third from the left at the table. My nan is standing behind in her pinny. She and her friends had cooked all the cakes. I was not quite so photogenic then was I? Nice hat.

And here, wait for it, is me on my tricycle. I won second prize and a special commendation in the Coronation fancy dress competition as a – Coronation Crown

The Royal Society of Musicians

I attended the annual bash for a first class lunch. We still don’t know who we will be given to replace the Queen Mum. As long as its not the Wessex’s….
Maggie Gibb was her usual fragrant self and displayed yet again a fine turn of calf and trim ankle.

The World Cup

The less said about this the better. I was in mourning for days after the Brazil/England match. I am just beginning to cheer up now. Still, let’s look forward to the European games. I also tried, unfortunately without success, to find an old photo of me playing in a testimonial match with Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks. Their hairdo’s were not that hot but at least their team brought home the World Cup for England. Less good hair days and more good foot days might be the way forward.
So to sum up June in the UK – all spin and no substance.
I’m off to La Belle France to rest and recuperate.
