REVIEWS
Dusty Springfield Fan Club
What's the Bulletin doing, you may ask, sending out details of a Sandie Shaw boxed set? Well, there is a connection between Dusty and Sandie, albeit a tenuous one. Tris Penna, whom some of you may remember from Dustys EMI days and the DSB Convention in 1989, has just produced a lovingly compiled and beautifully designed boxed set for the ex-Dagenham girl dubbed the Princess of Pop.
And a pop singer is unashamedly what Sandie Shaw is. Over the years, Sandie has been very underrated, not in terms of chart success but in public perception and undeservedly so. For, while Dusty and Cilla were battling it out often with American covers and Italian ballads, Sandie was forging her own niche in the music world with catchy unadulterated home-grown pop songs. In many ways she can be compared to Petula Clark, with a songwriter in tow to provide hit records, a European career to nurture and a vigorous recording schedule of her hits as well as other songs - in a variety of European languages.
None of the foreign language material is to be found here most of her Italian, French, German and Spanish recordings have been released on four separate EMI CDs over the past year. But what this boxed set does have to offer is every Sandie Shaw A and B side from 1964 to 1988, from As Long As Youre Happy Baby to Nothing Less Than Brilliant, as well as a selection of rarities and unreleased recordings.
The PYE years (1964 1972) take up just over two CDs, with the remainder of the third CD dedicated to her output from CBS/Epic in 1977 (why did so many female singers disappear temporarily in the mid-seventies?) and her singles for Virgin, Palace, Polydor and Rough Trade between 1982 and 1988. In her time it seems that Sandie has gone through more record companies than Dusty certainly in the UK and thats no mean feat. The fourth CD consists entirely of rare and unreleased material, from the obscure Portuguese release Toy to an early unreleased version of Dont Run Away, from a remake of As Long As Youre Happy Baby to an unfinished Be My Baby. All great stuff and what every Sandie Shaw fan has been dying to get their hands on.
The tracks, all 101 of them, have been digitally remastered from the original analogue master tapes and many are released in stereo for the first time. The package contains a 64 page full colour booklet, a biographical essay by Bob Stanley (how did Mr Stanley manage to mention virtually every female contemporary of Sandies, from the famous to the obscure, yet not Dusty?), previously unpublished photographs and memorabilia, and - sadly missing from any of Dustys back catalogue reissues - a track-by-track commentary from the artist herself, in this case Sandie.
Whether a die hard Sandie fan or someone starting out on a journey of discovery, this boxed set is a must have.
NB If anyone experiences any problems in getting this release, please let me know.
